Resurrecting the dead
« on: March 05, 2004, 03:36:32 PM »

OK reading all this computer geek talk has inspired me. I have an old PC in the basement that was custom built for my Dad a few years ago and I inherited it when he bought a new Gateway. Then I bought a new Gateway so it got retired. I've decided to name him Beer, all I remember about Beer is that he has like an AMD K6 400 processor (maybe) and windows 98 I think.

So tonight I'm gonna rip him open and see whats in there, then hopefully you good people (sorry about the geek thing earlier  ) will help me do what we can to make him bigger faster and stronger. Hell maybe I'll even try to install Linux on him. Or maybe (and more likely) I'll screw something up and turn Beer into a smoldering mass of melted wires and plastic.

Stay tuned......

Good luck with Beer. If all else fails: give him to me and I will drink him.

Seemingly nowhere? Is that the PC term for anal orifice?

I picked Felix and Sheba because they're both cat foods - I have no idea what the real favourite names are.

That rig was made for linux..... I have a similar rig right now running Slackware 9.1, and the thing runs like a champ. Click on the little frankenstein icon in my signature....

I know Slight that's where I got the idea. What I want to do is maybe turn beer into a CS server, for like 2v2 or 3v3 LAN partys. I'm thinking the only limitation might be memory? (128k) which of course is easily rectified. Or would the video card and processor not be up to the task as well?

my secondary rig is almost exactly like Beer, but Debian is still being a cow. I think I might try Slackware next since I hear good reviews from others.

Perhaps I will find a clever name for it as well.

Gah! If you want to run a CS server (at least a Steam one) use Windows. You all should know how much I loathe having to say that, but go play on icabbit for a little bit. That's a 800MHz Duron with 512MB of PC133 RAM. Not an impressive system at all, but it CHOKES on a 5v5 game using the latest linux hlds binaries. Valve is just going to pieces what with all this Steam stuff, and the linux HLDS is the biggest casualty. The performance is just HORRENDOUS! My suggestion: do everything but run HLDS on your linux box-- this is one of the very few things Windows is still good for.

It's free. A little complicated to setup and get running though. I have a tutorial in the Articles board, but it needs updating for use with Steam.

A good start would be to google hlds_v1120.exe and download it. Be warned: it's a whopping 421MB.
