FPS nightmare
« on: July 17, 2004, 07:43:57 AM »

When JB had this comp set up at his flat he was getting constant 40fps. The machine is reasonably old - 800MHZ, 256 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 2 - and is only being used because I can't get mine up and running. Trouble is fps is now down to 20 or less most of the time. I can't see any reason why this would happen given all the drivers are up to date etc. Any suggestions?

Did the geforce 2 come with Anti-aisling? Maybe you have it cranked all the way up? That card should be able to run CS nicely....any other apps running in the background? Is CS set to use the correct driver (i.e. not the minigl)?

Nothing else running in the background. Dunno about aliasing. CS is set on OpenGL at 1024x768 - I tried 800x600 to see if that helped but it didn't.

My friend is using a laptop, and his fps would start out high and then drop to about 10 for no apparent reason. Well apparently, it was running way too hot and his fans refused to turn on so everything just stopped working well to prevent from melting. Maybe your having overheating problems?

Just to give you a frame of reference, my machine is a 750 MHz Duron with a 64 MB Radeon that was released before they started the x000 numbering, so it's about equivalent to a "6000". 4 years old, easy. Runs CS at 1024 in OpenGL at 80 fps under Win2k-AS pretty consistently. Something's definitely going on with G's machine.

check the logs (if you haven't already).... you never know, the answer might be in there. Could be something as simple as a problem with the AGP driver.

Or possibly a BIOS setting limiting the AGP bus to 1X or something? Obscure, yes, but worth checking nonetheless.

I don't know how much this will help but have you run a spy sweeper? Spyware can limit the performance of your computer quite a lot - but I dont know whether it would show up as low FPS in CS or not but generally a quick sweep is worth while?!
I'd definately try this and check whether you have anti-aliasing and anistropic filtering turned on (graphics card setting under OpenGL)
If you still don't get any improvement you could try these tweeks...I'll give the default value first and then what you may want to try setting it to in brackets. Can't guarantee how much it will help but they should all provide some improvement in FPS
cl_shadows 1 (0) - setting this to 0 removes player shadows
cl_weather 1 (1 or 0) - can be set to 2 or 3 make sure its NOT
mp_decals 300 (100 or lower) - max no. of decals on map
r_mmx 0 (1) - MultiMedia eXtensions is Off should be ON
max_smokepuffs 120 (0) - set to 0, no smoke except SG's
gl_keeptjunction 1 (0) - 0 will reduce texturing quality
gl_lightholes 1 (0) - 0 will reduce texturing quality
gl_max_size 256 (128) - lowers player models quality
Changing these should see an increase in FPS (at the possible expense of some quality) but you may want to try and see if it helps. I've never changed the last 3 myself but the others haven't caused any noticable loss in quality for me.
It doesn't explain why you used to get 40 but now only get 20 though.
You could always post what you've got these set to:
rate cl_rate cl_cmdrate cl_updaterate
If non of that helps and you've updated the drivers and tried everyone elses hints then I dont what else to do, sorry!
But first step should be spy sweeper and then check AA and AF settings.
Good luck

No spyware. AA and AF made it worse.

I just had a thought.......... REALLY??
what program did you run? After a month I usually have about 30 or so instances that can be removed after a sweep - these are only things from hotmail and the like but NONE - are you sure?
Its probably possible but if your using windows and your on the internet I'd really doubt a good sweeper would find nothing?!
Whenever I''ve had spyware its not been causing a problem because as I say its just a cookie for hotmail or something similar. Except once when I was looking for a keygen for.........someone else then I got bad spyware!

Spybot Search and Destroy - I ran it not that long ago and removed a ton of stuff (only one really harmful one). This time round it only found cookies.

Mmmm.. cookies.
Check your BIOS for aperture size. Set it to the highest (256). That might help. Also you can check your netgraph. It most likely won't help any, but its worth a shot. Also try pressing alt+ctrl+del while CS is open, check your CPU and memory. If the usage is high on one, find out whats taking it up. I used to have a program that consistently took up more memory per second it was running. It made it up to 1.5 Gb before I even noticed.
You should also check your maxfps setting, if its at 40, it will be stuck there.
Question is, which OS are you using?
Your system : 800MHZ 256 RAM NVIDIA GeForce 2
That should be enough to run CS. You said there is no background programs running. Also no spyware/virus. From there you can remove everything from your msconfig (startup). You can also pm/aim/msn me if you need more help.

Windows 98 was on this comp until I formatted it - I only have an ME disc so it wasn't like I had a whole lot of choice.
