HELP! My talk button wont work?

Now at first i thought maybe Porter or Surg had muted me! But the other night I am not able to use my talk button? Q is assigned in the keyboard options board? i have gone to my Platronics sytem and the Mic works? The q button will not que in the bottom right hand corner like it normally does? If I go into voice in steam options it keep turning transmit volume all the way down and clicks off enable button and will not let me check mic in this section? Any thoughts, now I know I talk a lot and most people will not be in a rush to help but not being able to yell out locations is killing my team play! Thanks for any help!

I have my talk key as "f" but you may want to tur everything up in steam.

your saying that your mic works outside of the game right? I dont know why you have a "?" in there  .
Try another server maybe you were muted 
Otherwise maybe go into windows options and see if everything is working there?

Yeah sorry killer, oops on the? Yeah it works if I go out of Steam. If I am in a game you know how when you hit the talk button it gives you a cue in the right hand corner, it does not do that now? Windows, what do you mean exactly?

umm thats weird... well never mind on the windows thing. If it works out of game it must be a steam issue.
You may want to look on the steam fourms. Peopl are bound to have the same problem as you. If i have time I look into it later.

try going to a different server and test your mic.
if it works, then theses would be the symptoms that you were a lucky victim of an admin_mute.

Eni I take it you mic is still bound to "Q" or whatever you said it was! If you config file isn't read only then its possible things have been set back to default (im not sure what the default talk button is)
I use Alt cos I do a fair share of talking myself

Ah I just read your post again!!! Your problem is that it keeps turning it off in the Voice Options and turning the transmit volume down automatically right?
I've heard of this I think - I think the solution is to either turn your mic volume right down in your windows "Volume Contol" - or to NOT have it turned right down - I can't remember.
I'll google for the thing I read but basically if your mic volume level is set, in windows, to "something" (which I can't remember) then Steam auto sets your mic settings to off (or lowest). Sounds like what your getting yeah?

You could try and make sure you have these lines in your config file:
voice_enable 1
voice_dsound 1
they are the default values if you have them and it still doesn't work you could try setting "voice_dsound 0" as this has helped some people with a similar problem - it just disables DirectSound - worth a try cos you can always set it back
I'll keep hunting for a better idea though!
You didn't notice when it broke did you? As in did it break after a particular update?

Pancho!!! Dude you are the Man! I have not tried these suggestion yet but I think what you said makes a lot of sense, I may have the Mic volume way up! The only thing that has changed was I was messing with my Software vs. GL, but what you said makes the most sense! Thanks, Brother!

You could try and make sure you have these lines in your config file:

I'm quite sure Eni has no idea how to look at his config file and I'm also quite sure having him play around in it would not be a good idea.
As for him yelling out locations he typically says "they're over here" to which I usually reply "where is here!?" by which time he is usually dead.

You are definatly not muted, as unfortuantly as that may be. My friend was having that same problem yesterday. Check to see if it rebinded or totally unbinded your talk key. BTW how on earth do you play with mic on "Q"? I use the numbers to switch weapons and I have Q set to last inventory. My mic is on the scroll wheel button, which actually lets me shoot and tell people where I am.

I use Q too. And amazingly enough, I play without using the last-inventory command at all. I don't think I even have it bound to anything.

sadly, i have to yell at the top of my lungs to actually be heard. so i dont use the mic much..

meh. fooled around with my mic and got it to work again. i never tweaked the mic performance when i built this computer.

But with Alt you can speak and move in ALL directions!!! I don't think I could press F and still be able to press D to move right - unless I put my finger on both buttons together - but permanently strafing right whenever I want to talk would just be annoying - not to mention looking stupid to any specs that are watching!!!

Surg Surg Surg you really are a uplifting guy! I will keep my Q button as my talk button. I can move forward backward left and right and my ring finger can be puching the Q button with ease. It is still not working I did do as Panch said and turned down my volume. It work I had Windows and Platronix check it works except in the game. Like I said before even if I push it it should show the indicator in the bottom right it's not doing that? I have gone into options and keyboard and binded it to Q. I am really lost at this point, I have not used the cl commands yet though just remmeberd that? Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. I also do not here anybody talking either, i hear all the noise but nobody talking? That should hopefully be an indicator to something being up. Changing my Gsoftware to Open Gl would not cause this would it?

Technically I don't even use a key. I use my right mouse button (on the side of the mouse). Although I pretty much broke it now due to too much use (also use it for "forward" in windows).

Eni I'd definately check to see if you have those 2 lines in your config (I can send you a PM on how to check this when I get home if you want?)
The only other thing I can think of that might help is to make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card - its possible that a steam update is no longer compatible with your drivers - but this is a bit of a long shot, sorry

Dude i am going crazy over this, not even able to hear people talking is leaving me blind out in the open sometimes. The PM idea sounds good, I'll log on right after work about 5:30 here.
