Where's my Bottleneck????

Bought a new graphics card recently, Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. Got a good deal on it too. :-D Upgraded from a Geforce 3 Ti 200. So here's the thing. The 5700 benchmarks almost 3 times faster than the ti200. But I am not seeing this kind of performance out of it.....don't get me wrong, I've seen an improvement, but not what I expected. The rest of my system specs are as follows:
EMS K7S5A Mobo Athlon XP 1700 w/ 512 MB DDR PC 2100 Sound Blaster Live! Maxtor 60 gig ATA 100 Philips CDR 2400 series Matsuita DVD ROM On board SiS Ethernet
So.... do I have a bottleneck somewhere that is preventing me from using my graphics card to it's greatest ability? I figure that a 1700 is still a decently fast chip, and I have plenty of memory. The K7S5A isn't APG 8x, but it is 4x. Any ideas? Is a chip upgrade by itself worth the $80, or should I look for a whole new mobo with 8x AGP?

What are you using for your benchmarks? I don't really have any experience using 8X AGP so I couldn't tell you other then quoting review articals if that would help. I think your system sounds pretty reasonable though if your trying to play something like Doom 3 or UT2004 you might try doing everything possible to open up the pathway to your 5700 since those games are fairly GPU intensive. Another thought is to throw another 512mb of ram in your system.
I know someone who has a Athlon 1800XP, 512mb and a Radeon 9600XT and they are getting playable frame rates in Doom 3. Given that the Nvidia is actually a better preformer in this game you should be doing okay as well.
Now if your benchmarking off something based on Quake 3 or HL then I'd say it's going to be a wash since your old GPU could probably handle those games pretty well anyway.
Hope it works out for you. I think the 5700 ultra is a really nice card for the money and you got a great deal on it which makes it even sweeter

I figured out what my issue was... the main game that I didn't see any improvement on was ut2k4. Did some checking on line, and found one setting that needed to be changed, and that did the trick....running with all the goodies turned on at 1024x768x32 and I don't see FPS drop below 24, mainly run in the 40s.

Glad you got it fixed - for future reference don't worry about a lack of agp 8x - it is completely pointless in my opinion - and i think if you ask anyone who knows about it they'll tell you that there is barely any difference between 8x and 4x - it certainly isnt twice as good, as you may expect from the numbers

I'd say that's because SOMETHING's gotta be feeding data to the GPU (namely the CPU or directly from RAM) and even though the AGP bus is 8x, the system bus isn't. Unless of course the AGP has a straight line from the processor or RAM banks, but even then you're limited by the core speed of the CPU. An Athlon 1700 is going to be what, 233, 266 MHz? An Athlon XP 2500 (currently about $85 USD) would be enough to get your mother board speed up to 333 (assuming it supports it), and combined with PC2700 DDR (preferably utilizing the great dual channel stuff from the nForce chipsets), you would probably see a significant improvement in, well, everything.
But then, I haven't invested any money in my PC in about 5 years, so I'm only speaking in general terms. I downloaded the Doom 3 demo last night just for the heck of it. I got about 0.75 FPS... on the title screen.
I'm glad you found that the problem was software and not hardware though slight. Woulda been a shame to have invested the money for no return.

Porter what graphics card you got? Its just I heard that without the very latest drivers then all the radeon cards (including 9800's) will only give 1-2fps on doom3.
Of course this could easily be misinformation - but perhaps you may have an easy fix for doom3 too although I get the impression you weren't too bothered at your lack of performance

I have Ryo's old "Radeon 64 VIVO". This pre-dates ATi's switch to "thousand" numberings (i.e.: Radeon 7000, 7200, etc.). Runs Half-Life and other games such as MechWarrior 4 really well, even at 1024. he Tribes Vengeance beta plays smoothly, and so does the demo for that "Singles: Flirt up Your Life" game (it's fun trying to get them to make out! Tee hee.) but apparently Doom 3 is too much for it. Oh well-- like you suggested, I'm not exactly broken up about it.

Mechwarrior 4 had a damn fine engine. On my 450mhz/tnt2 rig that I bought it for, the detail was turned down, but it still played smooth and looked good despite my hardware which was underpowered at the time. That game was my last hurrah on that particular machine. Fortunatly, I had my current machine by the time MW4-Mercenaries came out, and I could turn up ALL the detail.

Indeed it does, though it gets hard to use the railguns and long toms when the game fog closes in at 50 yards to keep everything running smoothly. Heh, the Wumpas and I used to play that on the LAN a lot. Boy howdy can Ryo build a close range assault Daishi!
And THAT reminds me of my Mech2 days. My favorite mech was a Nova outfitted with 10 medium lasers all in linked-fire mode. You only had one shot before you shut down from the heat, but if that shot hit you could wipe out a MadCat no problem.
