first ..Hi all

This one is for porter but anyone can help me , some friend gave me his powerbook g3 to play with it a little bit. Now I use it for surf the net -safely- but i was wondering if i can do more with it, so I found a guy in the internet that is selling his  powerbooks g3 parts, what I want from him is the processor (450 mhz g3) and the ram memory (128MB and 64 mb)

are there compatibility problems if both are powebook g3?

Trust me, you probably do not want to try upgrading parts in older PowerBooks. With new ones it's easy-- the HD, RAM, etc, all swap out fine, but the old ones are a pain and not worth it. Really, you should only concentrate on upgrading the RAM, and if you do that, buy the biggest stick you can to put in there (probably a 512MB stick). Also, be sure you use Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) or Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) with it, since you'll see the best performance that way.

You can tell which model you have using a page like this.

Keep in mind too that brand new iBook's start at only $999 (USD), which is amazing considering what you're getting. Usually (and I hate to say this, but it's true) it's better to save your money for a new Mac instead of parts for an outdated one. Really, it's no different that someone saying they want to pimp out their Pentium 2 system-- it just doesn't make sense to do something like that.

I am considering getting an 12" iBook for schoolwork, however my general feeling is that they are a little overpriced for what you are getting. If I am going to pay a grand for ($1249 canadian), I would like more than a 30gb hard drive and 256mb ram. Also, the 1024x768 display feels a little limiting. The white finish also kinda looks ugly to me, and sitting next to a powerbook, an iBook just looks cheap and junky. I guess I am just not all that impressed with the razzle-dazzle element that comes with it, and I would rather put that money towards better hardware.

On the plus side, Mac OS X rocks, and they are super light-weight and have amazing battery life. But at the moment a centrino-based laptop, which I would just end up putting linux on anyway, for the same price seems like a better deal.

The iBooks are darned rugged machines though. They will seriously take a heavy beating and keep on going. The aluminum shells on the PowerBooks on the other hand, show their damage a lot more clearly, and if you drop them wrong, the aluminum can actually bend (ask Yuna ). Personally I would take an iBook over a PowerBook, but that's because they more than suit my needs already.

As for the 1024, I have never had a problem with it on my own 12" iBook, but I have a dual head G4 tower sitting on my desk for when I need to do real work, so laptop screen size is not an issue for me. I do love having a computer that weighs less than 5 pounds and is smaller than an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper though.

I agree with you on the RAM and the HD, but those are fairly easy to upgrade after-market if you want to invest in it. Crucial for example, is offering a 512MB stick for $110 USD. Again, I have a main machine with 500 GB of HD space, so I don't need much room on my laptop, but naturally that's just me.

However, I challenge you to find a Windows-based laptop that meets the general specs (including weight, RAM, HD, combo drive, graphics card, wireless connectivity, etc) that meets the iBook's for less than $1000 USD. I did it the other day for a friend-- the best we could do from retailers like Dell or HP or Sony was $1300 comparably equipped.

You may laugh at this, but my buddy who bought an iBook at christmas was looking at this one before I talked him into an iBook. He was going to be doing a bunch of travelling, and wasn't exactly a XP configuration master so the iBook made the most sense for him.

I am sure you can find plenty wrong with buying that one, I certainly dont want it, but it beats an iBook on specs.

Yeah but... it's TigerDirect. They're worse than Gateway..

The only two...three... well 4, things I take issue with on the laptop you linked to are:

1) Integrated graphics. *NO* dedicated VRAM. Whereas the iBook has a Radeon Mobility 9200 32MB
2) Refurbished. If I knew we were talking about used machines, I  could have linked to some cheaper iBooks too.
3) No FireWire, no USB2(?), unknown battery life, no software package (the iBook has Tiger and iLife , which would cost $210 USD separately)
4) Ugly. And it looks fragile. I think I could break that entire machine in half with my bare hands. (Note that this is a totally invalid argument, and that I have no intention of defending it.)

The only things the laptop you linked to really have over the iBook are the HD size and the default RAM. (I don't compare processors-- it's too sticky a topic.)

All valid arguments. It was pretty fragile which was a downside.

At christmas the 12" iBook was $1299 (CAD) and that partuclar one, not refurbished was $1249 if my memory serves me right.

Also, what really does the graphics chipset matter on an laptop anyway? the only reason the iBook has more, is that it is needed for OS X, which is a non-issue in the x86 world. I have also seen world of warcraft running on a first-generation G4 15" powerbook and the framerate was awful.

Right now, I am drooling over this   thinkpad ($1699 CAD) which eats the 14" iBook for breakfast.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but PC people do tend to like to USE their laptops for things too (most of which require the screen), and even Windows XP (outdated as it is) uses 3D hardware to accelerate 2D drawing, so that doesn't seem like such a non-issue to me.   And just to nit-pick: OS X doesn't require 3D hardware, it just makes great use of it when it's available.

Non-argument. The first gen G4 PowerBook was a 400 MHz machine with an Rage 128 Mobility and 8MB of VRAM. It's no wonder World of Warcraft looked slow. You try playing Half-Life 2 on an 8MB TNT card with a 800MHz AMD K6 processor and see how well it works.

That's cool. I dunno about eating the iBook for breakfast... I would put a pretty high price on having to use Windows (based on lost productivity) myself. Anyway, I'd still rather have an iBook, but then, I wouldn't have any portable right now if yu^rei hadn't given me his old iBook when he bought his 17 inch PowerBook.

I recall that awhile back we had a highly entertaining thread on playing games on laptops, and I think games are a moot point.

This is another one of those topics that just boil down to preference and aren't worth arguing over. However, I am going to defend the 'eats the 14" iBook for breakfast' comment.

The competitors:
1) iBook 14"
2) IBM ThinkPad T41

At the core:
1) 1.33GHz G4, 512k L2 cache, 133 MHZ system bus
2) 1.6GHz Centrino, 1024k L2 cache, 400MHZ system bus
Comment - Arguably apples to oranges, but my money is on the Thinkpad.

Ram:
1) 256mb DDR266
2) 1024mb DDR400
Comment - owned

HDD:
1) 60GB 4200 rpm
2) 40GB 5400 rpm
Comment - take your pick

Graphics:
1) 32mb Radeon 9200
2) 32mb Radeon 7500
Comment - I guess the iBook has a higher number on it's Radeon.

Display:
1) 14.1inch, 1024x768 native resolution
2) 14.1-inch, 1,400x1,050 native resolution
EDIT:: Actually the T41 display comes in 2 varieties the 1024x768 and 1400x1050, since the price is low, I am guessing the one for sale is the 1024x768.
Comment - owned

Optical Drive:
1) combo drive (extra $250 CAD to get a super drive)
2) super drive equivalent (dvd r/w)
Comment - owned

Weight, Volume, Dimensions:
1) 5.9lbs, 2241.81 cubic cm, 28.5cmx23cmx3.42cm
2) 5.1lbs, 1772.48 cubic cm, 14.5cmx38.2cmx3.2cm
Comment - owned

Battery Life:
1) "up to 6 hours"
2) "up to 5.5 hours"
Comment - It's impossible to judge the real-life milage.

Ports:
1) 2 usb 2.0, 1 firewire
2) 2 usb 2.0
Comment - iBook wins, but who owns firewire stuff anyway?

Network:
1) 10/100 802.11g
2) 10/100/1000 802.11g
Comment -  mmm, gigabit.

OS:
1) OS X Tiger
2) Win XP Pro
Comment - take your pick. I would throw Linux on the Thinkpad anyway.

Price:
1) $1,649.00 (CAD)
2) $1,679.99 (CAD) (It went on sale since I last checked!!!)
Comment - Let's call this one a tie.

Are there any categories that I am missing?

Looks fine. I tend to prefer Crucial memory, but they might not carry RAM that old, so whatever your preference is should work fine.

porter might laugh, but i found an old CD that was released about when win95 came out, it was a Berlitz japanese CD, and was curious if it would run.  I looked at the small pamplet in the front of the jewel case, and it claimed to run on MacOS 8.5.1 or higher i think.  At any rate, I shoved it into my iBook, and sure enough it cranked right up without an issue.  I'd agree with porter though, if you like OS 8, save your pennies for an iBook.  Though Terraji's thinkpad may be nice, i think Mac's make much better laptops then just about anything else.  Mainly because of there seemless wireless connect-ability.  If you have ever tried to get XP to have an ethernet port, and a wireless port open, then you'll probably start running into problems (at least i have everytime without fail).  Plus if your carting it around, mooching off other people's wireless connections, the security OS X provides is nice.  Don't underestimate the difference that 4200rpm harddrive will make on battery power either.  I'm still running the last of the G3 clamshells and it has well over a five hour battery (longer if i don't use the wireless card, but who doesn't use that!)  I personally think having an IBM comp. tower, and an apple laptop is really the best to get both worlds.  I think the true computer guru has both types of systems, and knows the strengths and weaknesses of them.  I won't bash my PC, and I haven't played with with a Linux GUI yet (though i plan to very soon).
ramble,
ramble
ramble
in my opinion macs do internet protocols and safety in a pretty gui better then anything i've seen, which to me, means good laptop canidates.  PC's still seem to have the gaming market, so a tower where you can upgrade gaming like parts is nice.

i think that covered everything.

Since we were talking about, there was an interesting PC bashing article on slashdot today...

http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/05/05/25/2218232.shtml?tid=118&tid=99&tid=3

like i said, PC's are good too, but this helps point out there "weakness".

Score one for the good guys.

Don't hold your breath. Apple is a hardware company, and it uses its software to sell its computers. If you can get the software for any old PC, there's no reason to buy a Mac. Instead, you buy a $300 PC and a copy of Tiger instead of Windows XP. Apple would have tons to lose if OS X and company were available for x86 platforms.

At the same time, there is something to be said for Steve Jobs' wrath. Promising 3GHz G5s two years ago and IBM not being able to deliver has not left a good taste in anyone's mouth, least of all Apple's. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make some kind of move-- maybe to the Cell or something-- but not to standard i386 architecture. It would be suicide.

Theres alot of good hardware coming out of IBM in the near future. IBM is doing the processor for the Xbox 360 ANDthe PS3 AND the Nintendo Revolution. Obviously IBM has some pretty big supporters with some faith in their technology. I would be shocked if Apple threw that away for crappy old Intel.
