linux faq

after many years of been in the dark side (windows) I just decide to give a try to other SO , maybe someone can give me a little introduction to what do i need to make my way into the linux world:
which is the best destirbution version: mandrake,redhat,debian, etc ?
what do i should know before i screw everything?
any website where i can find useful information?
thanks, I know slight will help me with this

Oh wow. It's a big first step when you first start with linux. I'm sure Slighty will have much better and in-depth advice for you, but my only suggestion right now is to use a different machine. Especially when you're learning, it can be easy to do something wrong, and you don't want to risk the computer you already have working if you can avoid it. Lots of old computers run linux just fine, so even if you have an old Pentium 1 system laying around collecting dust it should serve you well. Any other advice I leave to Slight and the rest to give.

Yeah... I have to agree... it is best to start off with a 'learning' system first, or at least set up a seperate partition on your main system.
Ahhh..... but we have the next best thing. The place to start is with knoppix. Knoppix is a CD based distro, that requires nothing be copied to your drive. It comes with almost 2 gigs of standard gnu and gpl'd software, and still qualifies as a bona fied distro. Load it up, and then spend some time playing around with it. It will give you a chance to get used to working in X windows and the CLUE (command line user interface).
From there, I would probably point you to redhat as probably the best beginners distro. Most hardware will be detected during install, and they do a pretty good job of keeping most of the packages on the distro up to date. My best advice to start with is to install everything (if you have the room). Full RH 9.0 install is about 2 gigs, most of which is software and development libraries. You'll save yourself alot of hassels later when it comes to compiling programs and hunting down dependencies.
For help, I would start with linux.org. This is one of the best walk-thrus on the net, and was a big help to me. For me, just learning the basics (terminology, program compiling, file locations, command line) was alot, but eventually things start to make sense (sometimes even MORE sense than the evil empire over in redmond). Also, check out linuxquestions, they have about 35,000 registed users on their forums, and the guys are great, probably some of the best admins/techies in the business. I'm on there too, under the assumed name of 'Slightcrazed'. The linux documentation project can also be of assistance, but it is a little technical for beginners. Once you get used to the command line, TLDP has HOW-TOs on just about any subject, from getting your vid card drivers working to installing minix on some old 386 laptop. Realnetworks makes a realplayer version for linux, and sun makes java for linux as well. Hit their websties and load up. Also, Nvidia makes a great little auto installer for their cards, so if you have a GeForce card, head to their website and get it. ATI cards will work to, but it takes a bit more to get them working.

Gkrellm Great little system monitoring program, shows CPU usage, memory, disk usage... all kinds of good stuff.
sourceforge if its a program with merrit, it'll be here.
freshmeat Great gobs of proggies, themes, you name it.
Xine My personal fav for a movie player. Handles DVD's, Divx, Avi, Mpeg, and some really really obscure stuff too. I believe that they have RedHat RPM's available, which should make installation easier.
WINEWine Is Not an Emulator, or so they claim. Wine is a windows compatibility layer. It 'tricks' your average windoze proggie into believing it is being run under windows. It works about 85% of the time. You can get Photoshop running on it too (which I know is a good thing for you).
Ximian (pronounced zi-me-an) is a company that is working towards the 'standard' linux destop. Redhat 9 comes with their E-mail client, called evolution, but also worth noting is their desktop environment, simply called the ximian desktop. Ximian desktop 2 is one of the cleaner looking solutions out there.
Windowmaker my personal choice for a window manager. Red hat comes with Window maker, but you will have to select it, it doesn't load by default (either KDE or Gnome will).

Good to hear it Neo. Knoppix is pretty cool.. I recommend it to anyone who wants to give Linux a try, but doesn't want to go through the hassel of a full install.

ok so finally i installed redhay linux  i am writing this post using mozilla browser , omg so many new buttons to push and so many thing to play with 
the bad news is that my windowsXP is not working anymore  , slight can you please help me i have all the windows stuff safe in a buck up .
if if install windows and linux again ,wich i should have install first in order to both work fine ?

what i did:
delete my current partition
add new partiotion using only 80 from 120 gigs of my HD
installed windows in that partition
.
.
use partition magic to prepare the partitions for the linx install
create 2 new paritions on the other 30 gigs
now my hd looks like this
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
l l l l
l windows / parition 1 l linux / parition 2 l swap / parition 3 l
l ntsf 80 gigs l l l
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
linux works fine , but when i choose to boot from windows starts loading then a blue screen says it has to reboot the computer

Dual booting can be tricky sometimes. Which bootloader are you using, GRUB or LILO? I think redhat defaults to GRUB, but you can opt to use LILO as well. Sometimes it's just a matter of tweaking the bootloader so that it recognizes the WinXP install correctly. I had similar problems when I installed RedHat the first time.
