ok..heres it goes

SUBJECT A)  6 year old computer with an amazing 4 GB harddrive, 64 MB memory. craving to be reformated for my brother's use. currently has 750 MB of mp3s that belongs to my sister. needs to come off. no burner. OS - windows 98

SUBJECT B) a very new laptop computer, capable of burning cd's, but currently has very specific network settings. if network settings get changed or screwed up, the user of SUBJECT B (from now on refered to as I, or me) will most likely fail college and work at mcdonalds. OS - windows XP professional.

PROBLEM - transfer mp3's from SUBJECT A to SUBJECT B without causing any problems to SUBJECT B's network settings

SOLUTION -

and....go!

If they are both connected to a LAN then subject B can share a folder, and subject A can copy the MP3s to that shared folder.

Subject B should create a folder, share it (right click, sharing) and then subject A can go to the run line, and type \\IP address of subject b\shared folder name.

So if subject B's IP is 192.168.0.100 and the share is called 'MP3s' then Subject A should:

\\192.168.0.100\MP3s

And then copy the MP3s to the folder that opens up.

Option 1

Ok can u hock both of them to the internet?

If you can u can get a ftp server and transfer the files that way

Option 2

You could turn on system restore and if anything gets ****ed up you could get your settings back.

Borrow a burner from a friend or from college.  It's a less technical solution but it seems logical to me.

my logical solution is to say "screw you sis" and just format it anyway.

but sadly that wont happen.

Please explain?
What do you mean by 'it's not reading the other computer'. Can the 2 systems ping each other? Are they on the same network?

If you don't want to change your laptop's IP settings, simply connect the old machine to the network your laptop normally is on (campus I suspect) and configure the older machine to match the laptop. Then get their IP addresses (use ipconfig at a DOS Prompt) and do as Slight said.

Plugging a ethernet "patch" cable between them will likely not work-- you would need a hub or switch in the middle to negotiate the connections, though you might be able to swing it without extra hardware if you go to your local computer store and ask for a "cross-over" cable to use. Then you WOULD just plug in the cable between the two computers.

Ya know...I had a brainstorm.

I think about 500 floopies would do the trick.

a USB burner isn't a bad option either...
