voting?

i think we should be able to vote on maps... say the server is full on office or something and then it changes to shotgun final and then everyone leaves execpt maybe 3 or 4 people. i think we should be able to avoid this by allowing us 2 vote on the nextmap we want 2 play at say the 2 min warning of a map change?

Yeah...mice bad. For some reason custom maps like that rape my computer Oh well, I think a regular ole' rotation is good, less arguing when people don't get the map they wanted.

I agree with sticking to the rotation most of the time. My biggest problem is that most custom maps usually leave the server empty and ends up forcing me to go to a new server. Is there any possible way to get map auto downloading back? Maybe we could add the CSR website into the server name to make people more likely to hit the site? I like playing custom maps, but I like having people to play against even more. Maybe we could even Spam the CSR website more during active play.

grounded has told me that its possible to have the maps downloaded from a http site instead of the game server.
you should look into it porter. it will make the custom maps more available to people

That would be great if you can redirect to an HTTP. I'd be willing to donate some bandwidth to that if it was an issue. The host I use basically for just email and pictures gives me 800mb of storage and 40 gigs of bandwidth that I dont come close to using all of. So let me know if you need anything.

1. The URL for the website (and the downloads) is spammed in-game every five minutes! As I've said before: anybody dense enough not to see it is not somebody I care about having at CSR.
2. The http download is a great idea, and I'd love to get it set up. That said, I have two pieces of bad news. The valve mailing lists are pretty full of people complaining about how well it doesn't work. Admittedly, I haven't tried it myself, so I reserve judgment until I actually get to play with it myself, but now we're getting to the second piece of bad news: the CSR website doesn't have a whole lot of room left. All you people uploading all your tags and screenshots and stuff has consumed about 40MB of space out of the 100MB (approximately) RG loosely allows. Another 114MB is just the daily map packs.
Slight offered to let us use his machine as the in-game http download server we're all talking about, but his upload bandwidth is pretty low, and I don't like making the game server dependent on an external server like that. I am very open to suggestions though-- I'll implement whatever we can feasibly do to get auto-map downloads in place.

It would be handy for 'in house' maps like cs_reloaded to be http served to cater for drop ins on the server. People might already have cs_shogun but they aint gonna have cs_reloaded already The downloading issue was precisely why I've used office tex in es_improbable to keep the dl small.

There are a ton of tex in the office wad that aren't used in the map (or at least aren't obvious in the map) so I just picked the ones that looked least like cs_office itself.

Porter, narf has a hosting package, and all he can think to put on his ghetto domain is pictures of his dog
its a real webhost so upload/download is fast, and he is willing to give a lot of monthly bandwidth, and more than enough space on the server to host the maps for in game download. You would have to speak to him about access for yourself via FTP, but I am sure that could be worked out.
Only reason I am putting in my 2 cents is because I know him personally (he is big computer geek) and map downloading is importaint to have if we are going to have custom maps in play on the server

Unfortunately the point is still moot till I can prove using this feature doesn't hang the server, but when I can, I will certainly be anxious for the help. Slight and I are going to be testing a mock up later this week probably.

forget the map issue plz. It's been changed and changed and changed, and people have tried to change it again and again. Just forget it because the admins like all these maps and they are gona be in the rotation. So just download the cs_full mappack from the site and deal with it.

I did notice the last revision of CS offered some sort of patch to the HTTP downloading

You are correct-- the patch was to make the download revert to the old-fashioned in-game "trickle" download if the HTTP method fails.
Slight and I haven't tested the http part yet, so I can't say if it fixed the server-hanging issue as well.
I would like to point out though, that the server hasn't crashed because of a custom map like de_747 since in-game downloads were turned off.

Isn't that better than from 20 to zero if the server just crashes anyway?

..yeah that would be one of the downsides to be being a computer nerd: in general we hate crashes no matter what happens afterwards.
For example, Windows crashing only makes me have to watch Windows loading again, and I can't tell you how much I hate THAT.

i havent been able to make XP Pro crash yet
anyway I know it will take some time.. but we should look at the http download... because not only would it solve the problem we are having, but since it is HTTP it should be really fast to DL the map and the people will be in game probably for the second round
