'Bout time for some new maps(alter map rotation)

Alright, I don't know about anyone else but it looks like the server is just about back to normality with how often the server has peeps on it and I think that some new/different maps are in order. I personally am sick of having peeps scream for the same five or six maps (dust, office, aztec, italy, and assault primarily).
There are A TON of fantastic maps out there and I still stand by my assessment that everyone out there is afraid of these maps because they don't know them as well and feel like they won't do as well. As much as I enjoy playing the classics now and again I enjoy playing unregular maps like mice even more so.
I don't know how much support/agreement I have here, but like I said, I'm just growing tired of the same maps over and over. Variety can be good and I think some variety now would be nice. Now, I'll point out that this is merely my opinion and I'm not sure how unbiased I am about identifying what's actually best for the server--I have to admit that this is more me venting and being impatient than trying to find what's best for the server. Just so people can keep that in mind.
I think some good maps to put in rotation would be: cs_siege cs_docks_v1 de_nuke de_747 (yes, there is a de of this map) de_survivor de_vegas de_area51 de_torn de_rotterdam(yes, this IS a good map!)
A lot of these maps are still classics but no one really likes 'em. This is just a preliminary list but I think it's a good start. I'd love to hear some feedback.

The only map that I would not play in there is survivor. For some reason I hate that map.

hate because you don't do well on it, or hate because you think it is a poor map?
Who actually determines what the map rotation becomes? I assume it was just kind of randomly selected at this point by someone like ryo or MM, but i mean, how should we determine which maps are good enough for the cycle, and which are not?

For now its me incharge of map rotation. This will be looked into within the next few days. If someone wants to take some initiative and do more research on the maps people like/want, it would definatly reduce my workload . I'll definatly take the current ones that have been voted into consideration.
As for Survivor, I guess its just the sounds and textures used. They are boring. Plain white, and that stupid sound at the start of every round.
Assault should be changed, its good for a while, but its really unbalanced. I'm thinking of changing it to another map, but I can't think of the one I have in mind I'll look into that tonight. (Maybe Rotterdam)

There is a piece of software out there called the Map Rating System. I found it a year and a half ago and thought about adapting it for iCabbit, but it would have been a lot of work. Basically, you get to rregister as a user and vote for all your favorite maps out of all the ones on the server, and which ever one's are the most popular every week get loaded into the mapcycle automatically.
It was an impressive bit of coding, but I wanted to integrate it into the site and the forum users DB because nobody wants to log in to a web site twice. I had a heck of a time finding it originally, and I still have a copy on my HD. I would think this would be a ideal solution if we can get it working here. Lemmie see if I can find a link....ah, looks like Planet Half-Life has since picked it up: http://www.planethalflife.com/mrs/. Looks like it's still being actively developed too!
What do you think MM? Is this a satisfactory solution to you? There can't be any argument about map popularity this way-- the mapycycle is created from what people want and ask for. Say the word and I'll try to get this running on CSR. (Probably without any integration to start with.)

I think some good maps to put in rotation would be: cs_siege cs_docks_v1 de_nuke de_747 (yes, there is a de of this map) de_survivor de_vegas de_area51 de_torn de_rotterdam(yes, this IS a good map!)
|
|
ok siege = good. i like that map. docks i havent played. nuke is pretty good. never playey de_747. survivor is eh. vegas is alright, dont like it too much. never played area51. torn is pretty good. never really remeber rotterdam. my overall opinion on these maps, there are too many new ones that i personally and i think many have never seen (correct me if i am wrong) and some of them or not very popular among people. i would suggest putting a couple of these interspiced between a rotation of more popular maps like aztec, office, prodigy, dust, etc. i think a rotation of these maps will empty the server more than fill it.
other suggestions for maps in rotation: Scoutzknivez, de_karachi (most recent one), de_remy (done or not??), de_train, de_chateua (or however the hell it is pronounced), and de_piranessi.
just my 2 cents

Well, like I've said, the reason that no one recognizes these maps is because everyone's gone recluse and only play the maps that they know these days. I understand that new maps are intimidating to a lot of people, but come on, we have to branch out sometime and the only way people are going to find out if they like these new maps or not is to play the map.
And I'd also like to point out that it's not uncommon for someone's initial opinion of a map contradict greatly their opinion after they've played the map for a while. (i.e.-people start off by saying tha they hate the map and then move to liking it after a while) On this note, I would like to encourage patience for if/when new maps get put into the rotation.
And, yes, I agree with ayo that not all of them should get put into the rotation but I also think that for some people new maps/maps they've never played before are a big draw. That's just a matter of how high of a novelty seeker our players are.

Hmm... you got some good maps there Raven, but I dont like the survivor, to plain, and to old for me. Torn, I dislike cause of the lag, and the whole map in general, sorry, I dont like Aztec, and it reminds me of it. I like rotterdam, great map, but it is never played enough, so with vegas. I find seige too like terrorist advantaged, but, with a good ct team, it can be won, find de_docks just too big, and well, maybe with more ppl, but then u come with the issue of downloading, and well most people aren't going to like wait for the download to be finished.
Maps I want from Ravens list: de_nuke de_vegas de_rotterdam
maps that I would like to see in: de_tpoint (custom, can give if needed) cs_estate cs_747 de_piranesi
Most of these maps, seem to move fast. You can get many rounds in tpoint, and so with 747. Estate is far by none, the most favorite map of mine ever, and not because I got 55-13 in 25 min at the old eN^ . Piranesi, is good, new textures, and well, I love it alot too.

cs_siege de_nuke de_survivor de_vegas de_torn de_rotterdam
These are, or were standard maps in CS at one time... If anyone needs these maps just lemme know, I can give em to ya. I personally like everymap in this list.
I also love docks, another map thats great. I thought it was standard in CS at one time, but I didnt list it cuz Im not certain.
de_747 is a good map. It has a tendency of getting extremely laggy tho.
But I have never played Area51
Oh, and Piranesi is one of my fav maps. I think that not only is it well layed out, but it is also one of the nicest looking maps in CS. Bt of a cross with Italy and Torn, looks great. I love it

Alright, I just took a look at rotterdam, and I have been looking for this map for ages. It will be in as of.. maybe tonight. Can someone also take the time to find screenies of wanted maps so those who don't remember them can have a little reminder? Theres another map I'm looking for feedback on, but I can't remember its name.
After a few seconds research, its TORN!!
K.. so for now, seems like those are the big two (Torn and Rotterdam).

OMG Porter! I only asked for something like this a year ago. That would be outstanding if that was implemented.

I started looking into this after reading your post this morning-- man does this guy not know how to write PHP! His code is just plain awful-- almost 6000 lines of code!! No wonder he says it can take more than 3 minutes to execute!!
I've already spotted a lot of little things that could be done much more reliably in the source, and even just looking at the install.txt getting this working is going to be a nightmare. MRS requires users to change php.ini settings, which is 98% of the time totally unnecessary if you know how to code well. This is going to be an issue for us because we don't have access to RG's php.ini, so at the very least using the MRS is going to require some (maybe a lot of) hacking on my part.
I think I have to make an executive decision and move this right below finishing the iMS on my csr-list though. I just don't have the time to do all these things at once, even though this would be another one of those things that would make the life of every CSR Staff member easier, most notably MM's! So what I'm saying is that I want to implement this too, but I gotta get the priorities out of the way first.
The iMS is very close to an initial release, btw. I get chances to work on it so sporadically though, that it could be another week before I have the opportunity to finish the last two hours of work I think it'll take to get it going live.
PS: I'm still working on blogging software for you too, MM.

I like cal maps the best. I like these because they are designed for competition and are relatively even. They have clear objectives and many routes to take. Ex of these maps dust2, aztec, inferno, nuke, prodigy, clan_mill1 and so on. These maps are the most fun to play for me.

I've never played any of the clan_ maps.
I love torn, I can't understand why some people don't like it.
Rotterdam, I think it's a very interesting, large map, but two things really annoy me about it...for one thing, it's too bloody dark...I hate dying simply because I can't see the person - even if I'm facing them and lookin at them - ...secondly, because it's so large once you get down to 2 v 2 or 1 v 1, you have to wate at least a minute for people to find each other...this map always has long rounds where everyone watches the last couple people inch around.
I also like survivor...though what Justboy said always worried me about the map too. I like maps that have environmental sounds though (ie snow).
de_museum...I've only played it with bots, but it seems like a really interesting map to play.
Yes to having a "no-standard maps night"...for say two-three hours just play maps that we'd never have in rotation, but are great...like the maps we playtested last year, some of them were excellent, and I've yet to even SEE Karachi.

Smokey best advice, host the map somewhere (or find a link to it) post it in the mappers delight forum for the owners to check out. Thats what I did with assault_nod. And what I am doing with a few other maps soon.

just go to google and type mapname.bsp a lot of links come up. click on one that will immediately start download and copy it to the forums. thats what i did with the maps that stealthmode suggested earlier (aim_ak-colt, prospeedball, etc.). i think this could be easier than hosting stuff and stuff. just my 2 cents
