I've gotten bored playing the standard stuff of late and have been turning to fun maps (not just fy_maps) to get my kicks. So I figured we should have a CSR Fun Map Day/Event/Night. Now the only way this would be possible is if I can get some help from you guys. By help I mean, help select the maps to be played, settings (Time limit,FF on? FF off?, etc), and guarantee you'll show up. So basically I'm trying to get people to contribute some ideas and volunteer some time.

People please chime in if you think this is an awful idea and I should have my admin removed or you'd like to see it happen.

Here are my ideas so far:

Format:
There are a couple of ways this thing could depending on the length of said event (all day or just a night).

1) A Single Night (1-2hrs)
3-5 maps
20-30 minutes each

or

6-10 maps
10-15 minutes on each map.

I personally like the ladder. With a shorter period of time you don't get bored with a map from overplaying and you also have an opportunity to try more maps.

2) All Day,
Make a rotation with 10-15 maps
25 minutes on each map

I don't really like that idea as much as I think people will just spread out when they join and we won't really get a crowd.

Maps
They don't necessarly have to be fy_maps, but I'm not counting them out as there are some that are extremely entertaining. Here's my very short list of potential maps, which are in no particular order.

de_torabora
awp_leetskeet or snowskeet
deuceball
fy_repub
cablecars (good for a few laughs)

That's about all I've come across and this is where I'm really looking for outside help. So if you have any ideas at all on what we should play, please speak up.

Server Changes
Config additions/changes that would enhance gameplay.

All talk is a must IMO.
Unrestrict shield/awp on maps you can buy?
FF on or off?
Lower the round time? (Might not be necessary as these usually go pretty fast)
Betting mod?

Those were the only things that I could think of that would be worth changing, but if I've missed something crucial let me know.

Date and Time
Try and figure out a date and time that would be good for everyone (or most). I don't trust that poll to pick a date. Also, I'm going to have to make an executive desicion and rule Sunday out because I have to work. Most any other day is fair game.


This is what I have so far, so please express opinions and submit ideas on this because I'd really like to see something like this go down. Anything you can do at all to help would be great.

I've never played many custom maps on this server so I don't really know which of these we've got but I've heard they're meant to be good.

I appreciate the advice.

For the maps, I was looking for more of fun maps, like alternate objectives (like torabora) or just simply no objectives (like fy_repub). Though I have nothing against playing a map with the standard defuse/rescue. I'm not sure to what category some of those maps fall into.

And by round time I meant how long each round within a map lasts. The server is currently set to 4 minutes, which I believe is dreadfully long.

Hopefully that clears up the direction I hope to take this, but I am open to anything. Thanks again for the input.

Yeah I've never played any of those maps I don't think, so I'm not sure how they'll fit in with this particular event - but I figured someone here would know if any of them will be any use.

I've just heard their meant to be good and like you I'd love to do something different on the server - but without organising a special event like this then it just doesn't seem to happen

I know what you mean about not really wanting/needing standard de/cs maps - but I would lke to play those maps at some point, so maybe if anyone knew which would work well - we could play one or two of them in this event and then have another event some other time.

Other fun maps:
de_rats/cs_mice
he_dodgeball2 (or whichever is in the gym)
fy_farcry
de_omg (or whatever it was you were talking about grounded sounded good)

I'd do a custom map night too, if these slackers would actually participate. The beauty of a fun map night is randoms are more likely to join.

We just tried fy_marioworld and fy_farcry_b1. The latter looks like a good choice but marioworld is a lagfest. I might whip up a simpler version of it to use instead - those textures are just too damn cool not to

I played dust with some random earlier - but 1v1 on dust gets pretty tiring pretty quickly - I held out for about 15-20mins but as no-one else joined I had to pull the plug on my efforts at starting a game

Tried a bunch of maps this morning. Most of them were crap but de_omg, fy_comicpirates and fy_comicpirates2 are probably all worth a look, de_omg especially. They're on the server and sv_down. Why I added the other crap ones to the server before looking at them I'll never know...

That's not as big a problem as it once was. Just make sure they are all on the fast DL, and if you do a "mock" install of all the maps to a separate folder and zip them up, I can host it as a map pack download here. I can even change that little spot that says "New map packs coming soon!" to point to the event page and the download link.

I was talking about the objective maps Pancho mentioned - even with fast download they're pretty big and not everyone is on 512k DSL or better. I never use fast dl myself - I always download beforehand. But yes I will make a map pack once we've got the maps chosen.

I couldn't quite figure how some of the deaths arose though.  Sometimes me and Stu would both die from some wierd explosion, pretty sure it wasn't a land mine because I had made it into the bunker by then.

Was well quality - sorry I could only stay for a short while - its so typical.

There are two detonator plungers on the beach - if you push the one on the right it opens up the path to the one in the centre. Pressing the centre detonator blows up one of the bunkers although I'm not sure if it's left or right or random or what. It is glitchy but it's still cool

Well for some reason a bunch of the maps kept crashing the server yesterday, despite the fact that they'd worked without problem before Had any more thoughts on this Porter? Would the server logs reveal anything?

Yeah like the awp/shield night. Once we've picked the maps (and made sure the server won't crash!) I'll upload a mappack and we'll post a day and time. If you have any particular preference as to time now would be a good time to mention it.

I doubt it, but you're welcome to check. You have all the access you need. Just log into the game server and sort the "logs/" folder by Date Modified. Find the one that's for the time immediately preceding the crash (it'll be down in the middle somewhere-- HLDS keeps only one year of logs) and grab the couple right around there. You can open them up in ConTEXT or Notepad, whatever.

I suspect all you'll see is the log end abruptly. Normally the last line is something like "Log file closed" but with a crash it'll probably just trail off after a random kill or something.

That's where I downloaded all the ones I tested the other day.

Porter: I left the logs folder on for like half an hour and they still didn't appear. Should it take as long as that?

I don't think it should take that long. I just opened up the logs folder here, and it took about 30 seconds, but it DID show up. What FTP program are you using?

The top link doesn't do it. As for the other one, I was just providing a link so Grounded didn't have to search for it. And if they get to use porters work, I get to link to their downloads.

If anyone sees something on there they'd want to play, speak up.

Technically that violates the GPL (which is what HLmaps is released under), but I haven't had the energy to pursue it.

No, I doubt it will end up like the "Summer Tourney Playoffs", the black sheep of the CSR Event Family, most particularly because I actually want this to happen.

If you people start throwing out dates, it will happen sooner. I was just hoping we could finalize the maps we're playing first before setting a date. Actually let me be the first to throw out a date that we probably can't mee: Saturday November 6. and with a time based on when you people across the ocean can play.

Sound good to the people that would want to show up?

Also some maps are still crashing like nobody's business. fy_killbill was fun until it crashed. Twice.

Both times as a round ended and right after we respawned it hung up and just died.

It's a cheating death optional server. I don't have cs on my laptop, which was teh computer I was using all Sat/Sun and therefore I didn't post the ip until now.


And I guess were not adding any more maps until we figure out why the server is crashing?

I can easily add more maps - whether or not they crash the server is hit or miss it seems. I'm downloading new ftp software right now to see if I can't have a root through the logs folder.

I'd say switch pdds_dual for de_westwood with weapon restrictions (presumably you could set up some sort of bind to restrict all but pistols, shotties?). I'm not too keen on beamworld and I'm still paranoid that omg and blockburst will crack the server. I suggest putting them last and moving deuceball up, just in case. There might be one or two decent maps I haven't added to the server yet - will have another look now...

As much fun I think duals is, I don't have a problem with substituting it for westwood. I don't think setting up restrictions should be a problem either. I think beamworld would be fun if we can get a bunch of people playing it. The warp action is crazy. I put faith in the server to do the right thing and not crash.

Deuceball is still last, as I still refuse to delete the old file.
