I dont see why not, and its not like anyone would really care since no one is ever on the server...it might even boost popularity

and if an admin joins and feels the need to play a different map then he (or she) could simply put a vote up

I've ben gearing up for a LAN party in addition to the job hunting and massive cleaning efforts. Expect an assault of about 8 or 9 people (5 Wumpas!) on the server sometime this weekend. We'll be able to fill the server halfway just from this apartment, so you all keep a sharp eye out and do your part to fill up the rest if you see us!

No one has been on this week, and that's the point. When you can count the number of people who have been on the server the ENTIRE week on one hand, you have problems. After your "LAN Party", then what the server returns to 0/20?

Animal spelled out my exact thoughts. You can still have your map nights and you can still vote on to whatever you want to play.

In the end, it doesn't really matter because Battelfield 2 is so damn fun. I've enjoyed at least 24 hrs of BF2 goodness over the last three days.

Edited because I thought I could use the word "desleeve" in there, alas I couldn't.

you could set it up like ESEA servers

and charge people to play there.

the way that server works:
when 5 people on each team join
IT LO3's (live on 3)
for a pug scrim
and when the scrim is over it will ask you an option change maps (for nextscrim), change teams and etc.

it would also boost the fourms being used more.

just a suggestion of course. you can choose to do whatever you feel is required.

I honestly don't mind either, it'll just be a tad inconvenient to vote for a new map at every map change (since it would otherwise go back to d2).

Now if the following idea is any amount of work forget about it.

I know that we have daily rotations as it stands. Is it possible to engage a specific rotation whenever you like? One rotation could just have d2 in it and the another one could have a bunch of random maps in it (like grounded's map night maps) and when he needed it on thursday night he could just load up that rotation?

I had planned on upgrading the adminmod plugin we use for the daily rotations to do exactly that actually. Instead of just having Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, you could also have arbitrary days like Grounday and... SGday

...that last one doesn't sound quite as good but you get the idea. You'd be able to use a command like admin_dotw g2 to activate a mapcycle named "mapcycle.g2".

The only thing that was really stopping me was engineering a good mechanism for having the mapcycle revert to the default. Let's say Grounded joins an empty server on a Monday that's running a default "always dust2" mapcycle. A couple other people join, and Grounded switches to one of his custom cycles; "g2" which contains 12 maps. Grounded has to leave after the 3rd map, but everyone else plays for a total of 5 or 6 maps, and then the game dies out and the server empties completely.

So here's the question: Now the server is completely empty, and still running Grounded's "g2" rotation. Without any extra tweaking, it'll stay this way until midnight, when the server would normally automatically switch to Tuesday's cycle. We don't want the server to perform this auto-switch if a custom cycle is active and people are still in-game though, but how long should the custom rotation last after someone activates it? Should the admin that activates it be able to specify a time limit as part of the command? admin_dotw g2 120 might enabled Grounded's mapcycle for 2 hours. Or maybe by a number of maps? admin_dotw g2 5 would run through Grounded's cycle for 5 maps (if there are 3 maps in the cycle it loops). But what if everyone leaves before the time/map limit runs out? Should the server finish the custom cycle up to the limit, or drop back to the default cycle when the player count drops to zero? Or should it drop back when the admin who started the custom cycle leaves? What if midnight rolls around in the middle of all this?

See? Lots of design questions that need answers, and then implementations. It wouldn't necessarily be hard to code, but I'd need to know how everyone wanted it to operate.

How hard would it be to have a vote come up when an admin leaves that asks if they wish to remain on the current cycle or return to dust2. If the vote passes go back to dust2, if it fails, have the vote run again at the end of every map until the cycle is finished.

My limited knowledge of coding tells me it's at least possible, but how difficult would that be?

Can you think of a reason why having the cycle revert to d2 after the player count drops to 0 would be the wrong way to go?

. Oh say...militia came up and there were three people left and they hate the map. Are they going to A) Play it out, B) All three leave and come back after it changes, or C) Leave and not come back. I think C) is the most likely.

I think it's a good idea assuming it's used in conjunction with additional ones, though not enough to stand on its on.
