Anyone else having problems with the speed of the forums here? It sometimes takes up to 30 seconds for a page to load, and it's beyond irritating.

I can't say for certain but I've theorized that certain threads have taken longer for me to load. Just a theory.

Damn you Ribs, beat me to it eh? Yeah, it just sits there though, like not loading anything, just sitting there. Then all of a sudden a minute or two later bam it loads really quick. Wierd stuff, and it's only happening on this page.

mine is pretty fast. It does depend on how many picture signatures it has to load, based on the thread. However, depending on which machine i'm on, it will lag when i'm typing in a post like this. not all the times, just sometimes, anyone got any ideas about that one?

Forum speed is definitely an issue. I can only surmise that recon gamers MySQL server is under very heavy loads during the day and this is causing the slow downs.

For me it depends on the time of day. Oddly enough, at 6am, its really slow. 12 (noon) its fine. I'm stumped.

There is another possible cause. Many people have images in their signatures that are off-site-- meaning they load from an entirely separate URL. While MySQL might very well be the culprit, it is entirely possible that only threads with certain peoples sigs in them take a long time to load. My guess is either that, or as Ryo said, it's the MySQL server at RG (which is under a pretty heavy load). One machine, 50+ databases. One database for each account that has MySQL set up. Not at all ideal. We could in theory move the database to an external server, but we would be setting up a horrible dependency on an another system.

But maybe a more reliable one.....
I host my images on three sites. I got 10 megs at adelphia, 8 megs at homestead.com (thats where my sigs are from, free account I've had for 4 years now), and a beta site at brinkster.com (also free). Now in addition to these, we have the main holy website purchased through yahoo on one of its business packages (better deals+emails). How much does RG charge / month? The bandwidth I get on my homestead account is 1 gig per month (which I have never exceeded) but only thing is my sig and my avatar (200kb combined? maybe less) so the strain on bandwidth shouldnt be that bad.
I would think the single mysql server that is servicing 50+ account databases is the culprit. Why can't you guys set up your own mysql server? I have the mysql server files (latest release from microcrap) if you guys are interested in doing it this way. I forget the total MB in size, but its not over 100-150 megs.

| I have already hunted down the vast majority of the bad off-site links. This can be safely ruled out.

| RG's webhosting is a part of the service they provide for the game server. It's technically a "free add-on". We have unlimited bandwidth. (Though they might complain if you start trying to host a file server for thousands of people.)

| Yes, the mysql server being the culprit is looking to be more and more likely. We can, and have, already set up our own MySQL server (for hlstats), but you need to consider what you are suggesting. Putting the mysql server (of which the ENTIRE site is dependent on) outside of RG is a dangerous proposal. You are introducing an extra dependency into the mix that we would rather avoid.
Plus, from the sound of it you have never set up a MySQL server, or are even aware that it is available as a free download from mysql.com (which, by the way, is less than 20MB). Otherwise you wouldn't have gotten a potentially hacked version of MSSQL from Kazaa. Aside from that though, you need pretty extensive access to a machine to set up the database server, and you wouldn't be able to run it from any of the web hosting accounts you mentioned.
On the other hand, if you have a data line that is faster than 1Mbit and synchronous provided by an ISP that guarantees 99.9% availablitity, is hosted on a dedicated machine with a static IP address, and is protected by a backup power supply that can last at least an hour and more preferably indefinitely, then maybe you've got something we can use.
Nevertheless, I will continue to harass RG about splitting the MySQL load.

ROfl its not from kazaa. It came bundled with win2k3 advanced server cough from Microcrap (and I was way off on the guesstimation of the file size, its 32.7 megs).

I know. More and more evidence is pointing to MySQl as the root of the problem. As I said in the News board: I've been calling RG every time the website is slow to ask what's going on, so maybe I'm starting to annoy them as much as their MySQL server is annoying us. The site seems pretty fast now (for the time being), so we'll have to wait to see if they've finally done something about it or not.

It is really fast now and I haven't recieved one of the opps didn't load in 30 seconds errors in awhile. I remember the days when recongamer was the "pwn" when it came to gaming networks. 20-40 ping constant. Now, they switched ips and it has its problems and pings doubled or tripled.

That may be true, but a 60-80 ping is still more that sufficient. The servers are on gigabit ethernet feeding to OC-48 and OC-192 backbones after all. I don't think our current problems have anything to do with the new IPs though. Trust me guys, I'll let you know everything I find out.
