The "Slow Website" Errors, Reviewed

Okay, so we've been having problems with the website being slow occasionally for a long time now. I've continued to stay on RG's back about it, and have finally gotten a "support ticket" opened on our account to have the problem investigated. Here's a review of what we've been able to determine so far:
- The "Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds has been exceed" problem only happens in the forums.
- This problem can happen to any user. (Anybody never seen that?)
- The code that powers the forums has not changed in the past 7 months, or can not be connected to the appearance of our issues.
- The errors do not occur with other pages in the site that use PHP and MySQL extensively (such as HLStats).
- Other heavy loads on the RG MySQL server (phpMyAdmin) do not lag the way the forums do, even at the exact times the forums are misbehaving.
So what we can conclude is that it's probably not the forum code itself, since 90% of the time it works fine. The code isn't changing at all, but one minute threads will load and the next they will fail. This leads me to think it is the operating environment that the code is running in (i.e. the web server itself or the mysql server that the forum is dependent on) that is changing. We can also (probably) exclude the build of PHP running on our server, since as I said, other heavy PHP pages like HLStats work fine all the time. This could reasonable exclude PHP's MySQL functions as well.
Any other input and brainstorming would be appreciated. No idea is too stupid at this point. I will post again if I hear back from RG.

Ummmm the first point
The "Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds has been exceed" problem only happens in the forums.
Ive actually seen that on the upload page... maybe because you have to use your forum account?

The upload page has a more legitimate (and easily explained) excuse. Uploading is dependent on your bandwidth and the size of the file. Just like downloading a 2MB zip on a dial-up connection takes a couple minutes, so does uploading a map using the upload form. If the file is too big or your connection is too slow, you'll hit the 30 second barrier before you finish the file transfer. There isn't anything to be done about this except increase the timeout for the upload page.

i dont know if this is included..but sometimes (like this morning with the new poll) the forum would load a post..but stop halfway through. for instance it would show maybe the first 3 or so posts, and the page would just end. not even a bottom copyright info is there.
sorry if this was already mentioned.

I just tried to read the What res? post. It only loaded the first post and then stopped and I tried to refresh and it did the same thing. I tried a third time and it did the same thing again.
But as for suggestions I have no idea.

I've had the same problem with certain posts. What res? and the HLS news post being two examples. These might or might not be part of the same problem. It could be because people's offsite images in their signatures and avatars aren't loading. The other thing it might be is the automatic image resizing. People aren't allowed to use images that are wider than 600 pixels. PHP will automatically resize anything over than down to 600. The docs for this feature note that it can "dramatically reduce your forum's speed" but I've never noticed a difference.
Just to see, I've disabled avatars in thread views, and turned off the width restriction. If everybody can be kind enough to remove any offsite links they have in their signatures to help aid this test, I would greatly appreciate it!

And don't forget to post to let me know if this has fixed anything!
Also post if you get any more 30 second errors!
Thanks!
