New Mapcycles

Hot on the heels of our switch from the blatt plugin back to daily rotations, we've updated the mapcycles. These are VERY standard, no frills cycles that you should think of as a starting point. Part of the goal of these cycles is to attract more players to the server, and to that end, you can expect to see a whole lot of dust, dust2, office and aztec. The idea (if I'm not mistaken) is to start with the same set of maps that every other server out there plays regularly, and go from there.
We will of course be taking feedback about these new rotations, but considering how much ugliness has accompanied trying to please everyone on this subject in the past, please do not be upset if we don't immediately jump to implement your suggestions. Hopefully we will be able to inject a little bit of diversity into these new rotations, but anything we do is going to be done gradually to reduce the shock-induced whiplash that always seems to occur with very abrupt changes.

Coolness.
On the mapcycle page, on the right, all those maps are available to play as of this moment? I am assuming that not quite all of them are set on fast d/l.

It's all on the page.
Yes, they are all available to play. Only the one's in bold are on the http server.

I enjoy playing with people also. I have to admit after playing Dust and Dust2 back to back I was up for something different, but that's what the voting plugin is for right?

That's the thing though, I haven't noticed any kind of detectable increase in players that could be associated with the new cycles. We're not any better off than before (in my opinion), and what's worse, we're stuck with dust and dust 2 ALL the time.
If I had thought about it, I would have designed a script to parse the logs and do daily player counts so we could have established a base line. I might still do that, but it won't help us for THIS matter.

I'd like to point out, I don't really care what we play at this point.
With that being said, have you noticed any fresh faces in the server when you're playing? No, I haven't, maybe a few but not many. I'm just seeing regulars that if they're are going to play, they're going to do it here.
Solutions to said problem: -Change the rotations -Admin_vote_map whatever the hell you want to play -Play less.
All of those are possible, but some aren't very practical or effective. I plan to use a combination of the last two, seeing as how I can't control the rotations.

Well dust and dust2 are consecutive on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday - they shouldn't be consecutive on any days! Not sure if that was accidental on Deuce's part but it's easily fixed. If these rotations are proving too repetitive just add another map to each day.

Just as I suspected. The default font size is too small to make out bold on these computers. I have to bump up the size two notches to tell.
X is configured badly all around since the screen is all flickery AND MY FREAKING MOUSE WHEEL DOES NOT WORK!! Did I ever mention how dumb the lab admins are around here?

I'm glad you figured it out. I'd up the default size in the CSS templates, but I'm betting that's gonna break a lot of the formatting around here.

In my opinion there have been more people playing at the times when I usually get to play. The only thing I have noticed is that whenever I've been on (and granted its not been that much) theres not once been a vote put up to change to another map.
Considering that the last few times we've had 6-8 players on each team which I can't say I've ever seen since I joined then I'd have thought that that sort of number was exactly the time to put up some sort of a vote - I know that after playing Inferno and Dust to build up that sort of numbers I was just itching to play one of the voteable maps.
And as people have said - the majority of the players still tend to be regs - which should increase the chances of a vote being accepted. We just need a bit more disscussion and initiative while in-game! From the few occasions I've been on I think we've missed chances to have some really good games on the custom maps.
To be honest I'm still not exactly sure how the voting thing works, I think it has to be initiated by an admin right? Anyway next time I'm on I'll start dropping hints for a vote cos I've been looking forward to getting this option. I think before the vote is put up we could just have a bit of agreement in the game as to what we want to play - theres no point in 4 good maps being put up for voting and people being so split that no one map gets enough votes.
Just my thoughts but as I say I don't play nearly as much as some - so maybe I'm missing the bigger picture!

To be honest, the voting plugin is a little wonky. Actually, it's working exactly as it should, but we have so many custom maps on the server that auto-votes tend to ALL be customs, with most of them being poor choices. I'm currently working on teaching the plugin to choose mostly standard maps with only one or two customs, which should make votes a little more sane and useful. I'm still open to ideas for allowing trusted regulars access to the startvote command if anybody can come up with a good way to keep EVERYONE from using (and abusing) it.

No I think thats the best way to go for now - I wouldn't trust most of us anyway!! In fact I'm still trying to figure out how you decided Grounded could be trusted - you do know he's a full-time criminal genius right?
But do you mean that if, say there was a whole heap of us on, and I said "Hey Porter could we have a bit of CS Reloaded action?" and then everyone else went "Yeah what a great idea lets change this sucky dust to something good" that you couldn't put up a message saying "change map to CS Reloaded?" "1. Yes" "2. No"
Cos thats kinda what I'd been hoping we could do - and I'm sure Ive seen it on other servers.
It just means that an admin has to take the initiative and put up the vote - even if everyone was to go "NO" because you'd put up a vote for say "militia" *euugh* then you could wait a bit and then put up a different vote.
Or you could put up a message saying "What map would everyone like?" and then quickly pick one of the most popular and then put up a vote for it.
I know that the above method would usually result in inferno or the like on most pubs but I honestly reckon if a message went up saying "change map to de-just" for example that it'd get voted in. We all know that usually there is a core of regs on whenever the server is busy (but I do admit I don't know what srt of %age etc you have to get to make the vote work)
Does that make sense? Or is it just stupid/not workable?

thats not what i call working - although to be honest it would have had to be a good current map for me to not vote for bikini and so the plugin probably rightly presumed that the 2 who voted NO had accidentally pressed the wrong number and so pressed ahead with changing to bikini anyway

I agree with Porter and Skip on the Dust thing for sure! I noticed that everyone would that mostly Regulars play here, have we not. The reason we are never going to have a ton of people beside regulars is we are a clean server. We have realistic Friendly Fire off all the time and I think majority of people want more, blood more freedom to be swearing and mean probably. So, let's not worry about getting new but keeping our REGULARS happy. What is going to work best with our core regulars, ask them, take a vote and then stick to it till the majority votes otherwise! The other way we can get more regulars is to recruit people into clans from other servers; it's up to all of us to promote CS and CSR. I played a map with Just boy the other night that was real open with forts and a running zip wire, that I had never seen before and found to be a great quick map! I also played Predator for the first time and found that to be a fun map also. We really have a ton of maps to be picking from and should assign groups to certain times of the day, middle and evening. Reality is everybody is not going to be happy 100% of the time. By making a vote to our community as in anything the masses decide the outcome, you may not like it but that is just how it goes. If a few are deciding and ruling and they are not the real feeling of the masses you will eventually drain our community. Just my thoughts, there are times maps I hate but if everybody else is having fun I try and learn what people enjoy about it. Really I find the tactics of every map unique and challenging. I think the ones we do poorly at are the ones we hate and really should be pushing us to learn it's tactics vs. saying it sucks. I'm sure the guys in Iraq are not saying hey sarge I hate Baghdad can we change the map! They are forced to endure learn and find a way to stay alive! Toughen up boys the real world is far worse than our little community here at CSR. Last of all but not least all the admins really need to be the aroma and flavor at all times for our server. You should all be concentrating on new names and making them feel at home and having a good time. What does it cost you to put up great job or comments to things done in a round? Go after the egos of the new guys and they will come back. Make sure not only to switch sides if you're a top played to keep the matches close. Beyond that make comments, help, guide, push for teamwork and they will want to come back. This is not very difficult, empower, listen, help and stroke the egos via great shot Porter, or great tactics and they will tell their friends to check us out! Never be mean and never make it feel clicky and try not to stack clans too much when non-regulars are around. When I go to another server and see scores of 4 vs. 12 I leave it is not going to be any fun, you know what I mean. The two top guys from the last match should never end up on the same team the next round. I can't stand when I see somebody like Just Boy on a team and we go to the next round and somebody like Surgeon leaves a team to end up on his, come on that's why people leave. I don't want a blow out I don't want to win every time, I want a challenging close match. We are all responsible in the end for this community and we all have to be conscious of our action and how they affect everyone. Porter you and I have had some things in the past over the Forum and spelling and I thought what a Jack Ass this guy is! Then when I play with you and see you're a real team player that tries to teach and help I said this guy is really a gamer, and my opinion changed. Only because I work with CEO's and business owners everyday and am successful did I stick around. As a young immature man who was being scolded or embarrassed for spelling I would have left and never returned. There are things that just not need be brought up in this Forum not knowing who or what people are about. I know I am never going to agree with everybody on everything but as long as it's friendly enjoy hearing other peoples views, but never to exploit or judge! You may think you have the power and be in control but even Rome was destroyed because it got to above the normal guy, we must listen to the masses, it's what supports us all.

That is quite honestly the single longest thing I've read since i left uni
And in your own strange way you do make a lot of good points
I think CSR is easily the best server for balanced teams - I cant think of a time where its been so unbalanced I've felt like leaving. other servers I've played on have 2 guys destroying the other on there own - but then the better players move on to the winning team to rack up those kills. I guarantee within 3 rounds of that happening the server empties cos nobody likes getting continually killed with no hope.
But I've never seen that on CSR which is credit to everyone who plays regularly - like Eni I think Porter is one of the best for evening the teams up, as I've nearly always seen him trying to hold together the losing team (often doing so practically by himself )
Sometimes I've been on a good team and thought about swapping but unlike the more experience players here I can't really make the difference like some - if I'm on a good team I can play well (I think) but I'm not the sort of player who has the ability to swap teams and make a real difference on a game
However I've never really felt the need to as the teams are usually pretty fair!

I still think we should have a day with nothing but CSR made maps.

I suggest we make each day's mapcycle have some sort of theme.
Day 1: CSR made maps
Day 2: CAL Maps
Day 3: Custom Maps
Day 4: Fun Maps
Any thoughts? They're in no particular order and the "themes" were just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. You can add more days if you wanted too. I just thought it would be something different and might encourage people to play.

Most games seem to be 50% regs or more these days anyway, i.e. people willing to play different maps.

I'd have to disagree, they don't seem open to playing anything.

I just thought it would be something different and might encourage people to play.

i vote for that ..and i think we should have more then 6-7 maps in the cycle per day

I think as long as we intersperse a few maps into the rotation it could work. I don't think a day of all csr or all custom would work, although a day cal probably would.
I'd say that on the whole the new batch of regs are pretty open to trying new maps as long as we aren't forcing 5 or 6 on them at a time.

This reminded me of something.
Porter is there a log somewhere that shows how many people joined per day and on which map? The closest thing I found was the HLStats that showed how many kills per map. That shows which is played the most, but is there anything else?

I could write something to parse the logs and produce exactly this output, but I can't say I have the time at the moment. I'm back at college, but I don't even have a room yet-- I'm sleeping on PK's couch.
Ah, homework sucks. Lemme see what I can whip up right now...

The script is done. It tracks number of times a map was played each day, how many players connected during each map, and also totals for each map-- both times the map was played and total players connected for each map. Problem is, I've been working with a small set of logs for testing. I need to download all 25,434 log files to be able to track the past year's worth of maps. I'll run the download tonight and post the data tomorrow.

Boy is it! It's 918MB worth of files to download! I checked just now, a good 9 hours later, and it's about 60% finished! ...Which means I'll have to come back in another 6 or 7 hours just to retrieve the data, and on that big a set, the script is going to take a hour or two (or maybe 5 or 6) to run. Should be fun! I'll update you all again tonight.

Not possible to download a smaller log set? Like half a year's worth? I guess it doesn't matter now you've started..

Possible, but annoyingly difficult. Instead of dragging the "logs" folder to my Desktop and having the ftp program do the rest, I would have ad to highlight the correct 12,000 logs (they aren't necessarily in order), and dragged the entire group to my Desktop. And nobody wants 12,000 files on their Desktop.

Kind of. It's the dreaded "Argument list too long" error that I'm stuck on. Not that anyone will understand this, but I have to get the Perl script to do the file IO instead of passing the script a globbing character on the command line. In other words, right now the following is failing because there are too many files in the logs folder:
./csmapstats.pl ./logs/*
I need to move the file scanning mechanics into the script itself:
./csmapstats.pl ./logs
Basically it adds an extra level of complexity. I'll let you know when I start the actual run.

Heh, he did say globbing.
And I thought Visual Basic was confusing at times.
