HLstats Temporarily Offline
« on: January 26, 2005, 02:21:47 PM »
|
|
A couple people have reported the errors that HLstats has been generating the past couple days. Right now it looks like HLstats is going to be offline for a couple more at least. Yu^rei is currently battling with his/our ISP trying to get service restored, but for the time being, stats are offline. This should be the only thing affected, and will only be temporary.
UPDATE: I talked to yu^rei last night. As usual, SBC has the worst customer service on the face of the planet-- they say service should be restored around the 7th of February. Sorry all.

I remember Porter saying the server eventually recieves the logs and the stats were updated when they finally got them. I could be remembering wrong though.

SG is right... and wrong. If the server is generating a particularly large number of events (because there are a lot of people on and the action is frenzied), then it isn't able to send them to the HLstats script as quickly as they are happening, so things get a little backed up. The difference is that the back up is on the server's side, not HLstats. As soon as it's able, HLDS *will* send the logs out to whatever IP address you specify... no matter whether there is something listening on the other end or not. Right now, there isn't anything listening, even though HLDS is still spitting out logs for all the events that are occurring as you read this.
Think of it like the checkout line at the store: if it's busy, everybody has to wait longer but eventually gets served in the order they arrive.... unless the store is closed altogether, in which case nobody gets served at all.

Well, I haven't seen yu^rei online yet, so I'm figuring no. I've left a text message on his phone asking for an update, but who know when (or if) he'll check that.

Good question. Really, there's no way to say. Yurei is considering switching to Comcast, and it would probably be faster to get new service from them than to wait for the SBC sloth to restore service, but the problem with Comcast is that quite a few things would break with the IP changes that would go along with it. The DNS info alone would be quite the headache to repair. To put it bluntly, SBC really has yurei by the...*ahem*s.
I was home for a day or two this past weekend: you should see the guy, he's going insane without an internet connection. It'd be like taking all the trees out of the chimpanzee exhibit at the zoo-- the monkeys would just sit there staring at the wall all day. ...same thing with yurei I'm afraid.

Scarface do not put yourself in jeopsrdy here for me, though I appreciate your kind words. Best here to keep your belief and thoughts to yourself or at least agree most of the time and you should go un noticed! The fact that they want you to go read old post makes me laugh they so badly want to make me look bad! Funny thing is I play with you all EVERY night and we all know how I am about helping peolpe and being a player. Even if i am under Kaoz when he is on, he is part cyborg Sharky let me in on his quickness. You see Sharkt is his dad and he has been playing so long and is addicted like the rest of us he made his son Kaoz into a cyborg just to play CS! I am starting to think Damiae may have some kind of upgrade too! Mo$te is not even cyborg I hear he is straight hardware, only his voice is a human written program! Dude best be is to not mention my name it is the thorn in the side of some youngins that dont know how to judge a man like myself. It is always easier to hate than love, if you ask some of them I am skito and always contradicting myself. Others will say I am the same all the time, in the end I am me and I like myself and I like you and many others so be cool! Plus I can always blame it on my childhood, I was once a baby and a child too! P.S. I added you guys to the original list, sorry again mate and dam you guys have gotten good! I have not been so quick to tell anybody all the things I told you guys, LOL!

The babies were a symbol of how deep down every pitiful sad alcoholic was once just a kid. Enialator's blood is 50% Captain Morgan's, he's just screaming out for help. His picture is just a message to us all that every innocent baby deep down has the chance to grow up to be a degenerate who lives out of his parents house stealing family pets and furniture and selling them for their booze/crack/whore lifestyle. The point is every baby is a seed of possible evil, and as such, I think we know why we gotta stop them.
Look people, I'm not saying we gotta wholesale execute babies, I'm just saying, let's keep our options open.

It really dismays me that you feel that way. (I bet that's something Sean never said.) If you'd seen the kind of viciousness from Eni that we have, you'd probably feel differently. I spent a long time trying to be nice to him and forgive him for his frequent "mistakes," but I eventually realized it's a chronic condition and I lost my ability to "pretend" to be nice to him. He has treated some people here very, very poorly, and he's lost my respect for that. I doubt very much I'm the only one that feels that way.
More to the point, whether I like it or not, I have a responsibility to the other 4 dozen people who frequent these boards. I have terms and conditions that I have to uphold, and ENi has a habit of seeing just how far he can stretch those rules, and most people don't appreciate that kind of thing.

Scar I am so ashamed I did not put two and two together! I thought you were a new guy, LOL! We use to Im each other and I have not seen that in so long I thought you grew found a girl and forgot about us all! I love you man and am so glad to see you and your clan doing so well of late, we need a scrim with the NM and btb GANG! Nicky I love you man and appreciate all the kind words. I am just going to ignore a couple people here and stop messing with them because younger people are easily intimidated and since they can•t beat up their fathers I am a great way for them to vent. I am too passionate and crazy at times and younger people are still fermenting in their own existence. I have pissed other admins off because I am saying what the community wants; I will now make sure I am in a group. I have even been told in personal IM's to go away by youngins here, sad really. To confront your advisory and try and understand him is the true meaning of being a man. Not everybody is going to see I to eye, that is no reason to hate. I still hold some anger toward Surgeon because of an old incident and if you really do go back into the Forums have at times joked around and complimented him on numerous things. It's the almighty attitude of spelling check and other far right or left ideas that it's my way or your crazy attitude hits my buttons. Bottom line is I have way too many friends and mates here that I will allow this server to make me go wasy even if told to go away. You see I am the better man and will just stop getting in your faces. What I will do is gang up with my community, friends and mates and just rape you on the field! No more confrontations with Admins here I am going to ignore the snide remarks and all the attitudes. Because in the end I have friends here in the real world and I have friends, family and mates here in the CS world. I have traveled the world, I have a beautiful wife, numerous homes, and I•m older and get along with all ages. Jesus last night I and Piyano were having so much fun making voices and playing together! I can•t leave because I will miss too many people and the rest of ya your loss! I would like a consensus from everybody about us all chipping in and getting another server so we can run off and scrim each other without messing up CSR and still be part of the server and community. I think with Nicky with us now it would be great, killer, skip and I were such noobs before the server was a joke! We need a scrim server there is not enough of it around here, we need better map rotations and I think we should take our slowest night and try a Friendly Fire day. In the end this is about family and it is one of the problems here is that in the real world you have to sometimes get along even if their family and that is what I am going to try to do.

That's why I suggested you start your own server. You've got the money, and you'll find or learn the skill, and as you say, you have SOO many friends here-- I bet you'd do well.
Plus, it seems like a good solution for everyone really: The young, immature, easily intimidated admin doesn't have to feel threatened by you any more, and you don't have to put up with being misunderstood by dozens of whackos. You also get to have things exactly YOUR OWN way, which is something I've never gotten to do here, despite having control of so much. Here, I always have to worry about what the community wants, regardless of whether I think it's a good idea or not (**cough**bbmap!*COUGHCOUGH** ). If you had your own server, you could get that mod that had people spray blood all over the place when they get below 20 health, and you could turn on friendly fire, and anything else you wanted. Geez, that'd be a real blessing to be able to do what you wanted instead of having to take into account what 60 other people wanted too.

You're right Eni, I usually just don't let it bother me but i was very frustrated overall at the time and let it pour out, sorry for snapping.
It was just practice last night, but the first clan we played (once i changed my mouse i trounced on de_cpl_mill and they left without playing the 2nd half, the other team we played was really good and i think we tied them. I owned on T side, but CT was a different story, of course some of my awesome teammates came through and played up to it though.

Porter I do not have all the time on my hands with everything else I do right now so I will be quiet and be a good little CSR baby. Once I get my properties all remodeled I will get a server together then and if your good I will have it so CSR has a scrim server. I never did anything to you until you poorly handled the Surgeon thing but I see how you have to much invested in him vs. me so i will forgive you for not at least making him apolajize. Feel free to keep begging me to leave but I was thinking of myself and not everybody else that I play with EVERY night here. I do not try to push anything i am very outgoing and love to have a good time and would let any of you guys stay at my house or help you out if you needed it. I will stop pushing buttons and try to stay as far away from anything that might offend or confuse you!

Well I'm busy too, but I can still manage somehow. I'm not trying to get rid of you, I'm tyring to get you to try on my shoes. You need to go be an admin for your own server-- I think you and I will get along a lot better after you've walked a mile in my shoes. Don't you think that would be a worthwhile venture? I mean, considering the position I'm in, I *can't* leave CSR, and you, you refuse to because you have too many friends here. Personally, I think anything that makes it easier for you and I to get along under those circumstances is a good thing. Why don't you just try it and see how it goes? ReconGamer especially will take care of a lot of it for you.

I would feel guilty effecting a server I helped fill. When I first hung out here it was dead and dead all the time. A lot of us have been comming here for the past year and I am part of the group that now makes this a much more vibrant server. Still does not compare to the other server I also visit, they have customs all the time and friendly fire is always on. I am not sticking around because this server has the coolest set-up, it's because I have played with many people here for a year now. I am part of a clan, they are my family. Like I said I'd rather help the community with a scrim server than go the route you would like to see. You want to see me fail and get my own server and be alone, because I am not cool and people would not come. I know who I am as a person and I know how cool I am already, and I do not believe it would be in EVERYONES best intrest. So let's get off this subject and focus on what we can do to make everybody happy and help this community that is also my community. I have read recently that the stats is not a free part of packages and it cost money now. Is this part of the reason why our's is down? If it is I think we should discuss it and see who is willing to help pay for that now if that is the case. Otherwise can we get a fund going and elect somebody to go on a trip to a far away closet and lend a helping hand!

Psychostats come free with any ReconGamer server. Money isn't at all the problem there. The problem is that as good as RG is at some things, they're really bad at others. HLstats works in a very different way from Psychostats, and because people here said they preferred HLstats, I found a way to accommodate them. The way I did that was by running the actual HLstats program on my own (well, Ryo's) computer, hosted on yurei's DSL connection here in Illinois. It's not at all an unusual thing to do, and never really causes a problem because yurei's DSL has always been on. We could have bought our own dedicated server that is hosted in a temperature controlled, generator backed, "co-location" facility connected to gigantic bandwidth. This costs a lot more than a DSL connection, so we chose the simple path. The machine we use is named iCabbit, and it too is battery backed-up. Even if yurei's power fails, CSR's stats will keep going for up to two hours. The only problem with the setup is if for some reason yurei's internet connection goes out. Unfortunately that happened back on January 25th or so. It wouldn't have lasted nearly so long if the only DSL provider here (SBC) didn't have THE worst customer service on the face of the planet. Thankfully, stats are a trivial add-on, not necessary to maintain the actual game server, which is the important part.
Anyway, if you got an RG account, you'd get free Psychostats with it. You would also get AdminMod, StatsMe, and anything else you wanted pre-installed. You also would get web-space, which is how we are hosting the CSR website. By and large, RG does a very good job with what they provide, it's just some unfortunate political stances they have that cause the occasional hiccup that I get frustrated with.

Stats are definately secondardy, but speaking of pyschostats I remember we abandoned pyschostats it was broken and we liked HLStats more.. I don't know if you've looked into it at all, but has it been fixed so to speak? Could we run it alongside of HLStats or until SBC gets its act together? Assuming it wasn't much trouble, wouldn't screw anything else up, or won't lag the server.

I haven't checked. I haven't had a reason to check. It's been so long though, most people have upgraded from PS1.9, which is what RG gave us, to 2.x, which is what is "current." I don't even know what RG did during that transition.

Theoretically, yes. Although, yu^rei got DSL back yesterday. Only problem now is that they gave him residential dynamic service instead of business class static service. That means the CSR game server has no way of knowing what iCabbit's current IP address is, which keeps HLstats offline for the time being. On the other hand, we're about a thousand times closer than we were on Monday.
Assuming it wasn't much trouble, |

It probably would be.

It probably wouldn't, but it wouldn't match the design of the rest of the site, kind of like how it doesn't match for that ctrclan.com site Eni posted about. Psychostats is notorious for being theme-unfriendly.
Definitely wouldn't. That was part of the problem we had to begin with-- RG has it set up so that ALL of their customers generate their stats from a single central copy of Psychostats, which broke all of my attempts to integrate the theme with the rest of the site. It does mean that stats generation will never lag the game server (theoretically at least, since you're still having to transfer 900MB of logs over the network every day to the Psychostats machine to parse, and that 900MB has to come out of the total available bandwidth for the game server, which means less for players).

Afternoon all. I have a proposition for hlstats. I've been thinking about it for a while and have decided I can finally do it safely and reliably. I'm offering to host CSR's hlstats database on my Tokyo based Funaho server that is connected to a dedicated 100mb fiber line with static ip's. I don't know if this makes sense but its worth discussing and then a good decision can be made. It may just be easier to keep things on iCabbit for now but 24/7 availibility is pretty much garunteed on Funaho. I just thought I'd throw this idea into the mix. Ja

It's midnight here lol.
Thank you for the offer, though the only thing I know about all of this is that with a name like "Funaho" we can't go wrong.

Hey Ryo, it wouldn't be hard to hack HLstats to use a "fallback" DB server. How hard would it be to set up database replication, using icabbit for receiving and parsing stats, and as the primary database server for the site stats, but have the web site fall back on stats from a funaho-based DB if icabbit goes offline.
It doesn't matter so much if stats continue tracking or not (if icabbit goes offline), because the hlstats daemon stops every once in a while for strange reasons anyway, but at least the web site would still display the most recently available statistics while icabbit was down.
What do you think?

Hi. That doesn't sound too difficult at all. I am curious, I know it's probably all the same, though I've seen stranger things, has anyone tried hlstats on . . . caugh . . . caugh . . . a Windows server? I'm just wondering if the process still dies randomly as it does on a Unix/Linux platform.
The MySQL replication can be done a number of ways from basic ftp scripting to other automated methods depending on the security level required. We can set that up if it would help. Anyway I'm hungry and there's a certain bag of potato chips that beckons me from across the room so I'm off to statisfy my hunger. Ja ne

When we get HLStats back up, think we could reset them?

You only started playing here in the past month or so, correct? If so, then stats have never tracked for you. They went offline before you even made the scene, so when they come back online, the most recent entries will be from January 25th.
