Connection problems?

Pulled from the Steam site:
Login Failures September 17, 2003, 1:17 pm • Chris Bokitch Some people might be getting the following message when attempting to login to Steam:
"Login to steam failed. Either the specified account does not exist, or the password was wrong. Please check your email address and password and try again."
This is a bit misleading - your account exists and is fine. The authentication servers are under heavy load right now. This problem should be resolved shortly. Thanks for your patience!

I have also found out people are having trouble connecting to the actual game servers...
it will connect to steam and launch CS fine, but when it gets to the progress bar and says "Validating Game Resources" it freezes up and never goes past that..
one known fix is if you use a linksys router, to downgrade the firmware...
why that solves the problem for linksys router users I dunno.. but it appears to be an issue

There are extra ports you MUST have open for Steam to function in addition to the old standard Half-Life ports. UDP 1200 is among the new additions. You probably don't have to downgrade as much as tweak the configuration, which probably changes to more strict defaults with the upgraded firmware.

so you just need to forward port 1200 on the router to your PCs local IP and it should be fine?
are there any others? My buddy is still having problems.

Beyond the port problem is that a validation server is down...that means even if everything is working on YOUR end, until Steam fixes their validation server, you cannot start Steam...even to play offline.
Looking forward to seeing if they have to balls to do this with HL2...I think they just shot the golden goose.

As I was informed.... steam being pushed out with 1.6 is REALLY a beta itself to get ready for the HL2 launch... by then they should have lots of bugs worked out.. who knows.. minor fixes might be pushed out without you even knowing when you open steam

I agree Fotty, I have an idea everyone will be suprised when Valve offer HL2 for downloading iterally weeks before you can get a CD.
Thats why I think there is lots of speculation about the release date, as the game has not gone gold yet, which you would expect if the release (ON CD) really was September 30th. Personally, I think the release is November 1st.

man i dont know if my 1.3 p4 will have the juice for HL2... i might need to beef up with a new system...
Any plans in the works for a CS on the HL2 engine?? or is that thinking way to far ahead since 1.6 was just released...
it still amazes me that a game that is that many years old still has such a HUGE following

HL2 will be mod capable, so someone may end up making a CS clone on HL2 on their own. I'm sure valve is planning on coming out with one as well, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

The FAQ at the VERC Collective says that Valve listened to the mod community a lot when designing HL2. It is supposedly much more flexible for modding than even HL1 is. It should prove very interesting to see what people can do with it. I can't imagine them NOT creating a successor to Counter-Strike for it.
